The best baby sleep app depends on what you need help with. Some apps soothe (they play white noise, rain or lullabies), some plan (they track sleep and suggest nap times), and some control a device like a sound machine. This guide sorts the main options by category, lists only facts that the developers publish themselves, and gives you a checklist to judge any app. One note up front: we make Baby Mantra, so we describe it as our app and keep it to the same standard as everyone else.

The three kinds of baby sleep apps

Before comparing names, it helps to know which job you’re hiring an app for.

Many families end up using two: a tracker during the day and a sound source at night.

Sound apps: soothing at bedtime

Sound apps turn your phone into a portable sound machine. They are usually the cheapest way to get steady white noise for naps, travel and a grandparent’s house.

SleepCub (Baby White Noise)

SleepCub is a dedicated baby sound app. According to its App Store listing, it offers 95+ sounds in 8 categories, 9 specially recorded lullabies, a volume slider and a timer, and it is free to download with optional subscriptions. Its listing’s privacy label says the developer does not collect data from the app. It suits parents who want a large sound library in a simple, illustrated interface.

Baby Mantra (our app)

Baby Mantra plays 27 sounds, which you can mix three at a time with separate volumes, and adds two things most sound apps don’t: 84 softly spoken affirmations in 7 themes and recordings of your own voice. It has a 15-minute to 2-hour timer with a gentle fade-out (or all-night play), dim night mode, lock-screen controls, offline play and no account. It is iPhone only for now. It suits parents who want bedtime to feel like a ritual, with loving words and a familiar voice, not only background noise.

Tracker apps: planning naps and nights

Tracker apps don’t replace soothing, but they can make the day more predictable.

Huckleberry

Huckleberry is a baby tracker for sleep, feeds, diapers, growth and more. Its paid tiers include SweetSpot, which predicts nap and sleep times, and its Premium tier adds custom sleep plans. It suits data-minded parents and caregivers who want to share logs.

Napper

Napper builds a personalized sleep schedule for your baby, adds a tracker for feeds and diapers, and includes sleep sounds and an article series on infant sleep, according to its listing. It suits parents who want schedule predictions and some sounds in one app.

Companion apps and built-in options

Hatch Sleep

Hatch Sleep is the companion app for Hatch’s devices (Restore, Rest and Rest+). It sets up sleep routines, sounds and the night light on the device, with an optional Hatch+ subscription for extra content. It makes the most sense if you own, or plan to buy, a Hatch machine. We compare hardware and apps in Hatch Rest alternative: sound machine vs app.

Apple Background Sounds

Every iPhone on iOS 15 or later has Background Sounds built in, with steady noise, ocean, rain and stream sounds. Apple says that in iOS 26 you can also add a timer. It is free and simple. It doesn’t mix sounds, play affirmations or play your own recordings.

What to look for in a baby sleep app

Use this checklist for any app, including ours:

  • Real volume control. Ideally per sound, so you can keep the total level around 50 dB or softer.
  • A timer with a fade-out. An abrupt stop can wake a light sleeper.
  • All-night option, if your home is noisy, kept low.
  • Offline play. No buffering if the Wi-Fi drops.
  • No ads during playback. A loud ad at 2 a.m. is the last thing you need.
  • Works with the screen dimmed or locked, with lock-screen controls.
  • Privacy. Check the App Store privacy label, and whether recordings or logs leave your phone.
  • A free tier you can actually use, so you can test it for a few nights first.

What it doesn’t do: Baby Mantra is not a sleep tracker, a baby monitor or a night light. If you need those, pair it with a tracker app or a dedicated device.

Which app should you choose?

  • Your baby struggles to settle: a sound app. Try the free tier for a few nights.
  • Naps are unpredictable: a tracker such as Huckleberry or Napper.
  • You own a Hatch: use Hatch Sleep at home, and consider a phone app for travel.
  • You want bedtime to feel like a ritual: an app with spoken words or your own voice. If you’re on iPhone, see our white noise app for babies setup guide.
