If you are searching for a Hatch Rest alternative, you probably want what makes it popular (steady sound and a calm routine) and are wondering whether you need another device. The honest answer: a phone app covers the sound part well, and a hardware machine covers the light part better. Below is a fair, side-by-side look. For a wider view of the options, see our best baby sleep apps comparison.

What a Hatch Rest-style sound machine does well

The Hatch Rest family are nursery devices that combine a sound machine with a night light, controlled from the Hatch Sleep app. Hatch lists Restore, Rest and Rest+ as the devices the app controls, describes “OK to wake” style features that cue children when it’s time to get up, and lists a backup battery on Rest+. An optional Hatch+ subscription adds more content.

Where a dedicated device genuinely shines:

  • Night light. A soft glow for feeds and diaper changes, separate from your phone.
  • Time-to-rise for toddlers. A light that changes color to say “you can get up now” is something an app on your phone can’t do in the nursery.
  • It stays in the room. Your phone stays with you for calls, photos and the baby monitor app.
  • Set and forget. Routines run on the device without anyone touching a screen.

What a phone app does well

A baby sleep app turns the device you already own into a sound machine.

  • Portability. The same sounds at the grandparents’, on holiday and in a hotel cot.
  • Sound variety and mixing. Baby Mantra has 27 sounds and lets you mix up to 3, each with its own volume.
  • Words, not only noise. 84 softly spoken affirmations in 7 themes, from Love & Security to a For Parents theme.
  • Your own voice. Record a lullaby or a goodnight message, so a parent who is away, or a grandparent, can still be part of bedtime. See record your own lullaby.
  • Low cost to start. Free to download, with a free tier you can use every night.

Do you need a Hatch?

No baby needs a sound machine. What every baby needs is a safe sleep space: on their back, on a firm, flat surface, with nothing else in the crib, as the AAP recommends in its 2022 safe sleep policy. Steady sound is a helpful extra that many families like.

A hardware machine is worth it if you value a nursery night light and, later, a time-to-rise light. If you mainly want sound, an app on your phone may be all you need, at least to start.

Can an app replace a sound machine?

For sound, mostly yes. A good app plays steady noise offline, at a volume you control, with a timer that fades out. Our setup guide for the white noise app for babies on iPhone covers silencing calls, charging and placement.

What an app can’t replace is anything physical: the light, the toddler wake cue, and a device that lives in the nursery so your phone doesn’t have to.

Why many families use both

You don’t have to choose. A common, practical setup:

  1. Nursery: a sound machine and night light that run every night.
  2. On the go: an app on your phone for naps out, road trips and holidays, with the same sound your baby knows from home.
  3. Bedtime ritual: a few minutes of spoken affirmations or a parent’s recorded lullaby from the app, then the machine carries the night.
