There’s one sound your baby already knows better than any white noise, rain or melody: you. With Baby Mantra you can record your voice for your baby, whether that’s a lullaby, a few loving words or a grandparent’s goodnight, and play it inside a soft sound mix whenever you need it. Not sure what to sing? Start with our classic lullabies to sing.
Why your voice matters to your baby
Babies are tuned to familiar voices from the very start. In a classic study, newborns just days old worked to hear their own mother’s voice over another woman’s (DeCasper & Fifer, 1980). The AAP describes how babies prefer the human voice to other sounds and recognize the voices they hear most, linking them with warmth, food and comfort (HealthyChildren.org).
Singing adds something more. Research suggests melodies sung by a parent carry social meaning for babies that the same song from a toy doesn’t (Mehr et al., 2016). That’s why we see a recording as an extension of you, not a replacement. Read more in do lullabies help babies sleep.
Who records, and when it helps
| Situation | What to record |
|---|---|
| Your nightly lullaby | One verse of your baby’s song, sung slowly and softly |
| A parent who’s traveling | “Goodnight, I love you, I’ll see you soon.” |
| Grandparents far away | A short hello, a rhyme or a family song |
| Babysitter or date nights | The same goodnight words your baby hears every night |
| The second parent | Their own version of the bedtime song, so both voices are familiar |
| Tired-voice nights | Your recording plays while you hum along or simply rest |
How to record your own lullaby
- Record. Open the voice recorder and tap record. Sing a lullaby verse or say a goodnight message, up to 60 seconds. Preview it and try again if you like.
- Name it. Save it with a name you’ll recognize, like “Twinkle Twinkle, Mum” or “Grandpa says goodnight”.
- Play it. Add it to a bedtime session alongside affirmations, or pick it from your saved recordings.
- Mix it. Choose up to three soothing sounds, such as gentle rain or a music box, and set each one’s volume low so your voice stays clear.
- Set the timer. Choose 15 minutes to 2 hours with a gentle fade-out, or play all night. Dim the screen and put your phone across the room.

Tips for a recording that soothes
- Record somewhere quiet, with the phone a hand’s width from your mouth.
- Sing slower and softer than you think. Soothing singing is lower, slower and quieter than playful singing (Cirelli et al., 2020).
- Use the same words you use at bedtime, so the recording matches the real routine.
- Keep it short and simple. A single verse, sung gently, is plenty. Make a few to build a longer set.
- Need words? Try a ready-to-read bedtime affirmation script.

Can I record myself for a sound machine instead?
Some sound machines let you add custom audio and many don’t, and features change between models, so check your device. A phone app makes it simple: record, mix and play in one place, and take it with you to grandparents’ houses and on trips. If you’re weighing up a dedicated device against an app, see our fair comparison of a Hatch Rest alternative.
